I was thinking about an ideal learning scenario and came to the conclusion that it would start with curiosity - really wanting to find out about something. Next, heading off on the hunt, finding out all you could about the topic, then sorting and analyzing what you had found and finally producing something new from it all.
In other words:
Being able to pose powerful questions
Knowing where and how to search for information
Understanding what to include and what to leave out
Creatively remodelling the information
and I would add the real measure of success is the ability of students to do this relatively independently with a high quality product as an outcome.
